Assessment of 15kV XLPE Industrial
Cables based on the Condition Health Index,

The paper presents the test results of a
substantial number of field aged 15kV XLPE
cables, which underwent condition assessment
testing at a large industrial site. The results
of 4 inde- pendent test methods as well as the
O&M history of the cables were considered in
order to determine their Condition Health Index,
CHI, which is correlated to a list of
recommended corrective actions. A number of
cables were processed according to the
recommendations and re-tested. A comparison of
the results before and after is provided. The
total test sequence comprised a neutral
corrosion test, a sheath test, a PD test within
the power frequency range and a VLF tan delta
test at 0.1Hz.
